Birthday Party Ideas for Kids

When thinking about childrens' party ideas and possible themes, I always try to remember that it's for children- it doesn't have to be perfect - just fun! And if you create it yourself, your child will think it's perfect anyway.

But if you are a perfectionist like I am, tha't ok. It just means you'll pay a little more attention to detail, that's all.

There are lots of party ideas and themes for children but only a few basic guidelines for a kid's party that every hostess should pay at least some attention to.

The number of guests invited to your child's party should be limited to just a few for babies. Remember, each guest will probably come with one or two grown ups. A lot of parents go by the child's age and add one to get the number for their guest list.

Keep the length of the party short for children:

1 - 1 1/2 hours for toddlers

2 - 2 1/2 hours for preschoolers up to about 2nd grade

2 - 3 hours for 3rd graders

3 - 3 1/2 for fourth graders

The length of the party will also depend on the theme and the activites you plan. Don't feel like you have to stick to the suggestions above! Let your common sense dictate.

Make sure you always have extras of everything. You never know who may drop by!

Don't forget lots of trash bags. Little ones get overwhelmed easily and if you keep things picked up, everyone will be happier (especially you).

Remember to stock up on batteries for any toys the kids might play with and any toys your child might receive. Also, don't forget about batteries for your camera.

Keep the food and activites simple unless you have help!

Have special favors for everyone.

The party ideas and themes below provide you with step by step directions including suggestions for invitations, games and activities, decorations, food, and favors.

I have also included some suggestions for entertaining the grown ups who accompany your child's guests. Not everyone feels comfortable entertaining the small ones and the big ones, but I have found that it makes me feel more relaxed during the party because everyone is having fun (and nobody is standing around staring at me!)
