Side-Dishes for that Extra Special Menu
What side-dishes do I serve with my main-dish? Corn or carrots? Potatoes or rice? Maybe green beans or Aunt Mabel's famous fried tomatoes?
What you serve with your main-dish should naturally compliment it. You want them to go together like: turkey and stuffing, hamburgers and french fries, barbeque and slaw - they just naturally go together.
We usually eat lighter foods in the summer and foods that are a little more hearty during the cold months. This is something to consider at your next party as well.
Also consider what's in season; there's nothing better than fresh vegetables to go with your main-dish when you're planning your next get together or dinner party.
And try to use your local farmer's market for your ingredients if you have one. You can't beat them for freshness and taste.
From the time I was a child, my mother always gave us 1 meat, 2 vegetables, bread, and dessert. I still keep to this formula because it covers all of the food groups. One vegetable is usually green and the other is probably a starch.
Although nowadays we often skip the bread and dessert at home (OK, the bread or dessert...I can't give up both at one time!), I always serve at least 2 sides and yes, bread and dessert at my parties.
Listed below are various dishes we've served at home to our own families and dishes we've prepared for our guests.
They are all equally delicious and we hope you find a dish or two that you can use at your next meal.
Enjoy!
